It’s pure science! The more you stretch a material, the more transparent it becomes; and more transparent means more light shines through. Scientists, including one of Indian-origin, have developed a polymer structure that may lead to cheaper materials for smart windows – surfaces that automatically adjust the amount of incoming light.
- The team, including Shanmugam Kumar from Masdar Institute of Science and Technology in Abu Dhabi, envisions covering window surfaces with several layers of the polymer structure.
- Designers could use the group’s equation to determine the amount of force to apply to a polymer layer to effectively tune the amount of incoming light.
